Congratulations: Moving Forward and Staying Connected

Dear Class of 2014.

It is almost unbelievable that we have spent these past four years together. Although some of you don’t have any idea who your Class Marshal and Alumni Sponsor were for most of your time at Trinity (some of your peers don’t have an idea of who we are even now), for those of you who do, it has been our absolute pleasure to accompany you on this journey. As it’s been said before, our hope is that as you “commence” your adulthood years, post-graduation, that you remain connected with your professors and with your Alma Mater. Those of us who encourage you to do so, really mean it. I love receiving e-mails and cards from Trinity grads informing me of their whereabouts around the country and the world. I am also happy to write letters of recommendation for excellent students who deserve them. It is always a pleasure to know of your successes beyond our campus and your Bachelor’s degree. more>>

It’s your turn. For the first couple of decades of our lives, we prepare. We become educated – formally and informally – about facts, ways to think, solve problems, live in society and in close relationships. It seems like we’re always getting ready for the next big thing.

That process of preparing and educating ourselves doesn’t end when we leave our formal education, but expectations and obligations do change. Fairly or not, society now views you as a fully formed adult, not someone preparing to be one. Now it’s your job to earn a living, contribute to society, lead in your community, take a place at the grown-up’s table. That sounds like an abrupt change, but you’ve been transitioning into that role for years. more>>

Team Trinity Move-in Crew
Per our annual tradition students are invited to participate in move-in day for new students. Student volunteers will be required to arrive by 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 20 to move in new students on Thursday morning, August 21. If you are interested, regardless of ability, please consider joining others by signing up through the Team Trinity survey link.

Saying Goodbye
Saying goodbye to friends will be a challenge for many seniors. Saying goodbye doesn’t come naturally for most of us. It is so emotionally uncomfortable or logistically awkward that it may consist of little more than one last social event that ends with a perfunctory “Let’s stay in touch!” But if you would like to do more than just ride into the sunset, read more >>

ATTENTION: Submit required proof of Health Insurance if returning in the fall.

In the past, you have been required to provide proof of health insurance in April prior to registering for fall classes. This requirement is no longer tied to registration. However, students are still required to have health insurance and provide proof of the coverage annually through an online waiver, available now.

If the waiver is not completed by July 1, the premium for the student health insurance plan will be included on your electronic bill for the fall semester. If you do not want that insurance you will have several weeks to provide proof of other insurance and have that charge removed from your bill. Students who do not do so will automatically be enrolled in the student health insurance plan, after which the premium will not be refundable.

Kaplan Test Prep Scholarship
Application due April 30, 2014 (Wednesday), 5 p.m., Online

Kaplan is offering a Test Prep Scholarship to one Trinity University undergraduate student classified as either a Junior or Senior. The scholarship recipient will receive one full comprehensive course package valued at $1,200 to $2,000 (varies by exam) and will be eligible for course materials for the GRE, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, DAT, OAT or PCAT. Graduate Gateway’s Summer Intensive Program in Political Communication

Application due May 2, 2014 (Friday), 5 p.m., Online

Apply to the American University Graduate Gateway’s Summer Intensive Program in Political Communication. It is a 10-week program designed to help students master the art of motivating an audience to take political action. Final application deadline is May 2, 2014. 13^th Annual Bright Futures Award: 2014 National ECE Scholarship Program

Bright Horizons is offering scholarships ranging from $250-$1,000 for full-time students pursuing degrees in Early Childhood Education or in a related field. Pre-Twilight Event
Come to the Tigers' Den at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 15 for a pre-Twilight event. Several seniors will present their commencement speeches from auditions. This event will be free and will be emceed by Seniors Jenni White and Katie Ogawa. Senior presentations, tentatively, by Nupur Agrawal, Lindsey Breier, Ricky Dolezalek, Laura Roa, Michelle Padley, and Alyssa Sedillo.

Residence Hall Closing

Residents are expected to leave 24 hours after their last exam. The residence halls will close at noon on Thursday, May 15. Only graduating seniors are permitted to remain until noon on Sunday, May 18. For more information, consult the Senior closing guide.

Give and Go!

As you prepare to pack up… make a plan to Give & Go! Clothing, household items, school supplies, laundry supplies, non-perishable food, and even furniture can all be donated to help those in need and to support job training in the San Antonio community.

Look for donation bins starting at reading days and help keep useable items out of the landfill!

Senioritis: The Only Cure is Graduation

Dear Class of 2014.

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, the definition of se-nior-i-tis is: “an ebbing of motivation by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades.” This could not be more accurate. Every time I walked into a class composed of mostly seniors in the past two weeks, the energy is low, students walk in late, there’s a lot of sighing and not enough deep breathing, and inevitably grades are becoming less important to some of you.

Let’s face it; most seniors are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and are ready to move on. But move on to what/where? Well, not so fast, Class of 2014! Slooooooow down! Take a moment to reassess what’s left of this, your very last semester at Trinity University. We still have about five weeks to go (that’s one third of the way)! more>>

April 1 Marks Changes in Package Pick-up

Starting April 1, most Mail Center operations will move from the Coates University Center to the Central Receiving area at 607 Kings Court. For the remainder of this semester, students will still retrieve mail from Coates boxes. However, package pick-up will take place at Central Receiving, down at the foot of the Prassel Parking Garage. Tentative plans for next year involve moving all student boxes to a central location on lower campus. Many small packages will be retrievable there. All of this is being done in an effort to make the Coates Center a better community space for current and future students. We appreciate everyone's patience during the last six weeks of the semester.

“Getting What You Want from Abstinence”

The final topic is this year’s Pizza & Pleasure sexuality education series addresses what may seem to be a paradoxical topic: Abstinence. Perhaps you heard a presentation on abstinence during middle school or high school that advocated “no sex until marriage.” That is not the message sex therapist and educator Cay Crow will offer. Cay will offer a different kind of message, one that recognizes that abstinence can be a self-affirming choice a sexual person might make whether for an evening, until marriage, or until the person and time is right. Managing Stress in Your Transition to Life After Graduation

If thoughts about your post-graduation life are stressing you out — perhaps because some things are unsettled, like landing a job or gaining admission to graduate or professional school — then check out these seven tips.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

It’s often hard to know how to respond to a sexual assault survivor, but two things are of critical importance. First, an empathic response that communicates your concern will show the survivor that you are willing to listen nonjudgmentally and offer support throughout the healing process. You will want to communicate that the assault is not the survivor’s fault and that you are available to talk at any time. Second, it is essential for a sexual assault survivor to have as much control as possible in handling the events following the assault. This pertains to everything from how much information s/he chooses to share with you to decisions about whether to pursue any disciplinary or judicial action about the assault. For more information about helping a survivor, click here, and visit Trinity’s Sexual Assault Web site. Survivors of sexual assault may wish to make an appointment with Dr. Kristin Eisenhauer at Counseling Services as well. And survivors should also know of this off-campus resource, the San Antonio Rape Crisis Center, which provides free counseling regardless of when the sexual assault occurred.

Preparing for Registration? One Less Roadblock…

Your Last Spring Time at Trinity

Dear Class of 2014.

As I gather my thoughts to address you this March, I can’t help but think about how fast this, our last semester together, is waning. But don’t freak out! You still have a chance (we’re nearly halfway after all) to make the most of it. If you’re deciding what to do with the rest of your immediate life after college, by applying for internships, studying abroad, for graduate school, or to a national or international teaching program, keep in mind that doing things passionately gets you much further than simply just completing a task. My hope is that whatever you decide to do after Trinity, you do it well and with your outmost effort/heart. more>>

AFTERLIFE

Once again, I find myself agreeing with our Class Marshal, Dr. Urquijo-Ruiz. In particular, her notes on Trinity relationships and whether they will end or continue strike a chord with me. My wife and I met at Trinity, dated there, and were married in my senior year. Yes, we’re still together. In fact, some of you met her working at the Alumni table for Countdown to Commencement (she was the nice one – I was the other one).

Not all of my friendships from Trinity have continued, though. I’ve made new ones, many with Trinity alumni; I’ve kept some; and many have just died from disuse. I was asked by a member of our class at Countdown about how to stay in touch with Trinity and Trinity people. It struck me as a really good question to ask, and it prompted my thinking. more>>

A Couple’s Quandry: “Do We Stay Together or Break Up after Graduation?”

The question of whether to continue or end a romantic relationship after graduation is anxiety provoking. Both male-female and same-sex couples may avoid discussing the topic for fear of experiencing or causing painful emotions. Indeed, having a conversation about the future of the relationship may generate some tension. On the other hand, a discussion about where the relationship is headed may also create deeper intimacy in the relationship. Either way, such a conversation is a necessary step in a relationship, regardless of the ultimate outcome. more>>

Sleep deprivation is a common experience among college students, and the consequences are numerous, including impaired concentration, impaired mood, and suppression of the immune system.
