Happy Break: Replenish your Energy!

Dear Class of 2014.

I hope you are all “hanging in there” during these few days before our Thanksgiving break.  Whether you celebrate this holiday or not, it will be a much-needed respite from the long haul that is Fall semester.  I have said it many times before that we really don’t have much of a break until the very end of Fall when everyone (students, faculty, and staff included) is tired and overwhelmed.  My main advice is to take it easy, take a deep breath (I always recommend this, no matter the occasion), and treat yourself kindly. more>>

Land's End

Land’s end.  It’s not just the name of a clothing company.  The term is used in sailing to refer to that last bit of terra firma you encounter.  You can hug the coastline only so long if you’re on a transoceanic voyage before committing yourself to the open ocean.  You’re almost at the “land’s end” of your academic travels. more>>

Surviving the End of the Semester
Only about two weeks of classes remain.  Papers and projects are coming due.  Then comes final exams.  That’s a lot of work to manage.  You need a carefully thought out game plan!  First, make a list of all your remaining assignments and exams in chronological order.   Second, break each task into manageable steps.  Third, estimate how many hours it will take you to accomplish each step for each item on your list.  Fourth, put the items on a calendar with your time estimates written next to them.  Now you can see how many hours of work are needed on the days leading up to each due date, so you can plan accordingly.  Using the Trinity Daily Activity Schedule, you can map out which steps you will do when.  For more specific study skills, please visit Counseling Services’ self-help page.
