“All you Need is Love… and an Open Mind”

Dear Class of 2014,

I write to you from the San Antonio International Airport en route to my home in Mexico in order to pay my last respects to my transgender tía (aunt) Nancy who at over 70 years of age had an untimely death as a victim of a hate crime.  She chose to live honorably and courageously as a woman for over 50 years and became the family role model for love, good humor, quick-wittedness, and understanding.  My tía Nancy taught me that we must live every minute of our lives as if it were the last one; that we must demonstrate our love and compassion to those around us at all times; that we must try our best to look fabulous and to be fabulous in spite of adversity; that our loved ones should know from us on a daily basis how much they mean to us. May she rest in peace.  more>>

Movin’ On

Soon, you will be free to choose whether you want to live on campus.  It’s always a little exciting to be freed suddenly from a restriction.  When I got out of the Army, I didn’t get a haircut for quite awhile, not because I usually wear my hair long, but because I no longer was living under any rule about keeping my hair a certain length.  Perhaps you’re thinking about “letting your hair grow” and living off-campus during your senior year.  more>>
