March 2013

Dear Class of 2014,

“Making Home Wherever We Are… Wherever We Go”

We are days away from our much-needed Spring Break and most of us are already making plans to “go home.” If you’re traveling far, hopefully you have already bought your plane tickets since they get more and more expensive by the minute.  If home is within driving distance, you’re one of the lucky ones who can get there at a moment’s notice.  But why is going home so important for each of us no matter our age or individual circumstances? Because it’s supposed to represent the place where people welcome us with a smile, where we feel respected, appreciated, needed, praised, and of course: loved.  more>>

Here You Go Again

Four years ago at this time, you probably were a junior in high school.  Maybe you were thinking about colleges (your parents were thinking about how to pay for your college), maybe visiting some campuses.  At about that time in life, most of us start to get excited about the prospect of a new and exciting adventure – embarking on a different living experience with increased freedom.  Many of you were content with your lives, surrounded by friends and family, living in familiar surroundings, everything comfortable.  You had high school figured out, and your relationships figured out (as much as teenagers can), and college wasn’t close enough to worry about – only close enough to imagine how good it would be.  more>>

Health Services will be closed on March 29, 30 and 31 in observance of Easter. Students seeking urgent care will find clinic locations in the Self-Care Guide.

Feeling Sleepy?
March 3-10 is National Sleep Awareness Week.  If you’re yawning today, or have been other days this week, it’s time for a sleep check-up.  Sleep deprivation is a common experience among college students, and the consequences are numerous, including impaired concentration, impaired mood, and suppression of the immune system.  In fact, getting adequate sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mental health!  Check out this brief article from the State University of New York—Geneseo.  And if you have trouble falling asleep, check out the comprehensive list of sleep tips from the National Sleep Foundation.  (BTW, tip #2 is a top tip; you may not be able to take a relaxing bath, but there are other things you can do to transition from study or play to quiet and rest.)

Would you like to consult with a Dietitian?
